Matty Longstaff scored on his Premier League debut as Newcastle piled the misery at St James Park Super Sunday on Manchester United with a 1-0 victory.
Local lad Longstaff applied the finishing touch in the end of a counter-attack midway through the second half with a crisp low drive that secured Steve Bruce – upon his 400th game as a Premier League manager – his first victory over the club he had used to captain at the 22nd attempt.
The 19-year-olds fantasy debut goal condemned Manchester United to another off defeat because their winless run on the street.
With senior associates Victor Lindelof Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard outside injured, Newcastle seized the chance to set the tone from the very first whistle using an abysmal display in the North East rain.
The visitors could not deal with the speed and energy before Longstaff beat David de Gea all ends up having a thunderous volley to be denied by the crossbar, of Allan Saint-Maximin, who had a few glimpses of this Manchester United target.
The possibilities kept on coming to Newcastle. Fabian Schar glanced a header onto the roof of the net on the mark before Miguel Almiron spurned a glorious opportunity to open his Newcastle account once he hesitated in getting a shot away and allowed Harry Maguire to grapple using a last-gasp block.
Andreas Pereira enrolled Manchester Uniteds first shot on target 39 minutes before Schar almost turned into a Diogo Dalot crossover to his own, but the best opportunity of the half for both sides fell for Maguire, who headed wide from a corner from six yards in first-half stoppage period.
As had been the case in the first half, Manchester United watched a lot of the ball lacked the necessary incision required to create the breakthrough, even while in the other end their problems had been compounded with the introduction of Andy Carroll, that sent a bullet header on the pub within 10 moments of going into the fray.
And as the figures of Daniel James and Marcus Rashford threatened to swing the match in their sides favour, Newcastle felt the aim their performance warranted.
Saint-Maximin along with Jetro Willems lead a fee, forcing into the last third in which the ball has been rolled into the path of Longstaff, and he rifled a low shot outside De Gea that sent St James Park to raptures and Newcastle in their way to some priceless victory.
