McCoy had Quizical into a rhythm and shortly had his mount in the prime place from the beginning of the contest and traveling.
Despite top-weight, the 11-4 favourite galloped on resolutely to beat Aussie Valentine – ridden by McCoy’s excellent friend and long-time rival Ruby Walsh – by a half and a period dozen. Red Striker was steered by johnny Murtagh .
McCoy – who performed a Frankie Dettori-style flying dismount later – stated:”I’m pleased to be here today racing for a terrific cause.
“We could be very proud of horse racing generally in Ireland. The stable staff, racegoers, owners, trainers – everyone has given much support to the incredible person that Pat Smullen is.
“Pat is a special person and a great friend to us all. Unfortunately it is tough and gloomy circumstances what we are doing now, but it just shows you what a brilliant game this is.”
He added:”I genuinely always thought I was going to triumph! No you want to compete against the very best, that is what sport is all about, and these are the jockeys.
“I said I would never ride in a horse race again and that I meant it, but I’m glad I did now. You need to compete against the best and that’s what has made this special.
“I got on the ideal horse and that is what counts”
Smullen’s popularity helped produce the star-studded cast for the race.
The former jockey of dermot Weld was forced into retirement after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer – and he was not able to ride himself, as he is undergoing a second round of therapy.
Clearly moved by the event, Smullen said:”I’m very happy for Sheila and John Lavery who own the horse. John was composed when he made AP to get this outcome is what everyone wanted to ride the horse. It is absolutely remarkable. I’m overcome.
“This is not about me personally. This is all about people who are in this circumstance and we’re out make a huge difference and to lift a whole great deal of cash and give people assurance, as it does me.
“What a privilege to be involved in what’s a terrific industry.”
